Their little family of four is a dream come true for Carrie and Mike, after trying for two years to grow their family, only to be met with heartache.

During an interview with CBS This Morning in 2018, Carrie revealed that she had suffered three miscarriages in two years.

The country superstar said she eventually “got mad” after suffering so much loss, and then she prayed:

Why on Earth do I keep getting pregnant if I can’t have a kid?” she recalled herself saying. “‘Like, what is this? Shut the door. Like, do something. Either shut the door or let me have a kid.'”

Her prayers were answered, and baby Jacob was born on January 21 of this year.

After Jacob was born, Mike opened up about everything he and Carrie had been through to welcome him, writing:

The last few years has has had its challenges and it makes this moment even more sweet! We didn’t know if Izzy would ever have another sibling but we learned through it all that God is in control and his timing is perfect!

In a new interview with People, Carrie opened up further about those challenges, and shared some heartbreaking thoughts she had after her miscarriages:

Of course, you wonder if it’s you, what am I doing wrong, or what have I done wrong. I remember having conversations with Mike trying to make sense of it all.

Carrie said that even though she had suffered so much loss, she didn’t want to seem ungrateful, saying she was “beyond blessed” in so many ways. But she still couldn’t keep herself from feeling defeated as she struggled to expand her family:

But the miscarriages made me get real with God and say, ‘Okay, I’m kind of giving up a little bit. If this isn’t meant to happen, then I need to accept that and know that someday I’ll understand why.'”

It turns out that it was meant to happen, and now baby Jacob is a bright light in his parents’ lives. In fact, Carrie called him “a perfect little bundle.”

In the midst of her pain, Carrie turned to music for comfort. One song she wrote during that time was “Cry Pretty.” The song’s emotional music video just won the CMT Music Award for Video of the Year, and you’ll understand why when you watch it below.

We can’t imagine the pain that Carrie and Mike experienced over the past few years. We’re so happy their prayers were finally answered through sweet baby Jacob.
