Admired Actor Donald Sutherland Dies At Age 88

Donald Sutherland, The Actor Known For Roles In Many Iconic Projects, Has Died

Beloved actor Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88.

Sutherland was born on July 17, 1935 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. According to Deadline, he had 200 movie and TV credits to his name. His career spanned over 60 years.

He scored his first big break into films when he appeared in the 1967 World War II movie The Dirty Dozen, in which he played Vernon Pinkley.

Sutherland’s next major role came in another war movie. He played Capt. Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce in the 1970 M*A*S*H movie. The film was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture. The movie inspired the hit TV series of the same name that followed from 1972-1983.

Also in 1970, Sutherland appeared in another war movie, Kelly’s Heroes. He played Sgt. Oddball in the film.

Then, in 1971, Sutherland played the title character and appeared alongside Jane Fonda in the 1971 crime drama film, Klute.

Sutherland continued to amass a number of notable film and TV credits, starring in projects such as Don’t Look Now, JFK, Animal House, Ordinary People, and Pride & Prejudice.

In more recent years, Sutherland became known for playing President Snow in the Hunger Games film franchise.

His last movie to be released in his lifetime was 2023’s Miranda’s Victim. Also in 2023, he appeared in Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan‘s series Lawman: Bass Reeves as Isaac Parker.

Throughout his career, Sutherland won a Primetime Emmy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Critics Choice Award. He also received an Honorary Academy Award in 2017.

Donald Was The Father Of Designated Survivor Star Kiefer Sutherland

After his death, Donald Sutherland’s legacy will live on through his wife, Francine, and their children: Roeg, Rossif, Angus, Kiefer, and Rachel.

Rossif, Angus, and Kiefer all followed in their father’s footsteps and pursued acting careers. Kiefer is probably his father’s most recognizable child, known for his roles in Designated Survivor, 24, and A Few Good Men.

 

According to Deadline, Donald Sutherland died on Thursday (June 20) in Miami, Florida, following “a long illness.” The family plans to honor him at a private service in the future.

Kiefer paid tribute to his father after his passing, writing:

With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
