Brandon Lake’s Ode To The Power Of Prayer Reimagined As A Duet With Country Star Cody Johnson

“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
– Matthew 18:20

Christian artist Brandon Lake found success in a big way last year, and he’s continuing that upward trend in 2026 — with eyes still fixated upon the heavens.

As with “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” which he originally released as a solo track before bringing in Jelly Roll for a duet, Brandon Lake is starting the new year with another powerful duet.

“When A Cowboy Prays,” a country-tinged worship ballad that finds Brandon leaning into the timeless American imagery of the West, while singing of the eternal truth of God’s love for His children, is now a duet with a natural fit: country artist Cody Johnson.

Released at midnight on Friday, Jan. 9, the duet between Cody Johnson and Brandon Lake is now available.

Beyond being a call to prayer amid the daily struggles of life, the release of this song is certainly an answer to prayer for fans of the two artists.

“When a cowboy prays, it starts raining in Oklahoma, long lost sons come home to momma, and those stubborn horses break. When a cowboy prays, with a whistle and a rumble, it’s as strong as it is humble. This whole world just ain’t the same when a cowboy prays.”

Brandon Lake’s lean toward country is not new for the Christian artist, and 2025 proved a significant year for him as he expanded his range and his reach within music.

In 2025, Brandon made his debut at the Opry, led worship at CMA Festreleased an album, went on tour, and was even nominated for his first CMA Award.

Now, with the rerelease of “When A Cowboy Prays,” which has been reimagined as a duet with country star Cody Johnson, Brandon is setting roots in the country scene.

Writing on Instagram of their collaboration, Brandon said, “When a song you love finds the right voice. COJO brought something truly special to When a Cowboy Prays. Honored by this collaboration and thankful for this friendship.”

Interestingly, Brandon Lake has also sung this song as a duet with another country artist.

During Brandon’s King of Hearts Tour stop in Atlanta, Georgia, on Oct. 4, 2025, he brought out country singer Cole Swindell.

Together, the two performed “When A Cowboy Prays,” as well as Cole’s own Christian crossover song, “Make Heaven Crowded.”

Revisit The Music Video For Brandon Lake’s Solo Version Of “When A Cowboy Prays”

The official music video for “When A Cowboy Prays” was also released on September 26, 2025, and it depicts the daily life and struggle of working on a ranch and breaking horses. It also shows the familial struggles that can happen between generations.

Here, a man is struggling to be engaged as a father, and even as a husband. He’s concerned with time and progress, and has started taking out his frustrations on his sons.

After neglecting his Bible for some time, the father opens it one day, finding the polaroid photo of his sons that he had been using as a bookmark. There, he reads from Ephesians 5, which begins by stating, “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.”

We then see his fingers run over the words of Ephesians 5:25, which states, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.”

From there, he approaches his interactions with his family with greater love and patience, helping to mend the relationships with those he loves. The music video ends with his family happily reunited in prayer at the dinner table.

Beautifully shot in the CinemaScope 2.35:1 aspect ratio, this is a music video that tells a personal story in a grand way. While there’s no dialogue, the lyrics to “When A Cowboy Prays” fills in the gaps.
