Leading up to the 2016 CMA Awards, artists of both the past and present did their part in remembering the classic by recording covers of some of country music’s best! Titled the “Forever Country Cover Series,” artists such as Eric Paslay, Josh Turner, and Lee Ann Womack dedicated their talent to various songs.
As Damon Whiteside, CMA Senior Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Partnerships, explains, “This is a great opportunity for the fans to experience and discover the rich heritage of the format by hearing these classic songs performed by contemporary and legendary artists.”
The series chose to honor Vince Gill by paying tribute to his heartbreaking classic, previously sung at country music legend George Jones’ funeral, “Go Rest High.”
Singing the hit ballad was the band The Wilkinsons, who now call themselves Small Town Pistols.
The trio gave a beautiful, and exceptionally raw, performance to Gill’s song, emphasizing on the emotional platforms attached to the lyrics. Their simple, acoustic sound carried the tune from our speakers directly into our hearts, leaving us with a craving for more. Bravo to the series for showcasing such a timeless and talented band.
