Before his country music career took off, Morgan served in the United States Army for 17 years. He has always made it a point to honor the troops throughout his music career, whether through his songs or by participating in numerous USO tours. In 2006, he was awarded the USO Merit Award for his dedication to supporting the military. In 2023, Morgan even reenlisted and was sworn into the Army Reserve during a performance on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
During the PBS special, Craig Morgan was joined by the U.S. Army Field Band’s Six-String Soldiers
Together, Craig Morgan and the U.S. Army Field Band’s Six-String Soldiers, a group of Army members known for their bluegrass and country song covers, performed two songs during the night. They kicked off with Morgan’s hit “That’s What I Love About Sunday” and then delivered a powerful rendition of “Soldier.”
The song is from Morgan’s 2020 album God, Family, Country and highlights the values of the American soldier. It expresses the strength, dedication, and reliability soldiers demonstrate not only in serving their country but also in their everyday lives when they return home.
“I’ll get it if you need it / I’ll search if you don’t see it / If you’re thirsty, I’ll be rain / If you get hurt, I’ll take your pain”
“I know you don’t believe it / But I said it and I still mean it / When you heard what I told you / When you get worried, I’ll be your soldier.”
