Full Spoilers – Let’s Talk Season 5, Part 2 Of Yellowstone
After nearly two years, Yellowstone is back! Here is what we learned in the first episode.
Fate Of John Dutton
It was widely known that Kevin Costner would not return for Season 5, Part 2 of the show, due to scheduling conflicts. However, some fans still hoped that Taylor Sheridan, the show’s writer and creator, would craft a storyline that would allow for the potential return of the character John Dutton, the family’s patriarch.
That hope has been been destroyed.
Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), John Dutton’s daughter, is seen running frantically to the Montana governor’s mansion, which is boarded off like a crime scene.
Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) arrives and asks his sister what she knows. She says:
“I know nothing, but I know he is gone.”
He comforts her briefly, and then they push their way into the mansion.
Inside, the siblings walk slowly to the bathroom, where they both find their father dead. A gun lies on the floor, and though they see a man’s body, his face is obscured.
John Dutton is dead.
When alone, Beth confides in her brother, Kayce, saying she believes their adopted sibling, Jamie (Wes Bentley), killed their father.
She whispers, “It was Jamie.”
The crime was carefully staged to look like a suicide, a blatant insult to the late John Dutton’s legacy. As the story unfolds, it’s revealed that the order to kill came directly from Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri), but the Duttons do not know that.

Beth And Jamie’s War
Nearly two years ago, Jaime and Beth’s series-long feud hit a breaking point when both called for the assassination of the other.
Convinced that Jaime killed her father, Beth is determined to get revenge. The episode concludes with Beth asking her brother Kayce to kill Jaime alongside her.
While Jamie was not directly involved in his father’s death, he was not completely innocent. He had a conversation with Sarah that initiated the murder. Still, he shed some tears over John’s death…
The Fate Of Kayce’s Family
Kayce’s family consists of Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille), his wife, and their son, Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill). The family spends very little time on screen in this first episode. The only major news is that they have decided to move into a house given to them by John Dutton on the family ranch.
Kayce is concerned about the move because a prior vision showed him having to choose between the ranch and his wife, Monica.
Monica is motivated to move into the new house because she wants to separate herself from the death of her unborn child that occurred in a previous episode.
The episode jumps between two different times: before John Dutton’s death and the aftermath. The families’ scenes are prior to the death.

What About The Crew?
Season 5, part 1 ended with the whole crew of ranchers preparing to take half the herd to Texas, and in this season, the audience gets to see them settle in the new ranch.
The crew scenes carry the expected ominous tone that the show sets, but they also bring the only brevity to the episode. They are often seen making fun of each other and joking around a campfire, which takes place before John Dutton’s death.
Since the crew is in Texas, Rip (Cole Hauser) and Beth spend most of the episode apart.
The final shot shows their reunion, with Beth weeping in his arms.
