Michael Daus was adventuring through Yellowstone National Park with his family on May 31st when they captured a video of a grizzly bear hunting a bison.
He said they remained on the lookout the whole time, they knew there were bears were in the area and carried bear spray on them. It wasn’t until they got into their vehicle, however, that they noticed the bear on the other side of the parking lot.
The family said they weren’t crazy about returning to find a bear that close to them but were relieved to be safe in their car. They were in the parking lot located near the Grand Prismatic Overlook trailhead area between Biscuit and Midway Geyser basins.
“I was particularly relieved that the bear seemed more interested in the bison, so while very close to the car, we simply maintained what felt like a safe distance,” Michael mentioned in his YouTube video below.
The video showed that both the grizzly bear and bison appeared to be perfectly matched young adults. The bison held his ground vigilantly and they battled it out until the bear somehow got behind the bison with a bear hug and began biting on its back.
The bear bit chunks of fur out of the young bull as it tried to get away with no success. After a while, the bison got desperate and ran into the water in an attempt to get the bear off its back. Ultimately though, the bear was too strong for the bison and killed it.
Michael said the battle started around 2pm and he filmed the two battling for 17 minutes on his iPhone 11 Pro Max. Later, he edited the video down to five minutes on iMovie. The video was then posted on YouTube. You can watch it now below!
