29-year-old Kris Miller from Wisconsin is an operations manager for the Nordic Mountain country park and found something truly wild on trail cam footage.
Kris said he first noticed a dead hawk on the ground as he was going into the park to check on the area as he usually did. No one’s allowed to hunt there so it seemed very odd to see the bird on the ground.
He decided to check out the footage of a trail cam that was overlooking where the hawk was found, and to his surprise, was very astonished at what he found. The beginning of the video showed what appeared to be the hawk swooping down on a rabbit that was hidden in the grass.
The rabbit must have let out a cry for help because within seconds a white-tailed deer ran onto the scene and started attacking the hawk. The bird quickly let go of the rabbit and it ran off to live another day, however, the hawk was not so lucky.
The deer tenaciously kicked its hard, sharp hooves at the hawk and totally overwhelmed it. Preventing the hawk from flying off, it was only a matter of time before it eventually died from its injuries.
What makes this situation so rare is that footage like this does not often get filmed in the wild. It’s interesting to see how the whitetail deer came to the aid of the rabbit so quickly after it let out a distress call.
