The Top 7 hopefuls were mentored by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The actor and Broadway star told Fosterto “channel your inner rock star” and “lean into America and go, ‘America, I’m almost there!'”
John revealed that he chose “Almost There” because it was set in his home state of Louisiana.
“This was a movie that was set entirely in Louisiana, my home state that I’m so proud of. So I wanted to do ‘Almost There’ for my home state,” John said.
Ahead of his performance, John admitted that he was homesick for Louisiana and is looking forward to returning to see his family. But, he knows that it would be a great disservice to those who have supported him to “lay off the pedal right now.”
John took the stage without his signature guitar and delivered a performance that showcased his incredible vocals.
Judges Respond To John Foster’s American Idol Performance
Lionel Richie was the first to speak up after John’s performance. He asked the singer, “Who do you think you are?” to which the crowd responded with thunderous applause. “That was amazing! The crowd spoke for me.”
Carrie Underwood said, “You are another one that, it’s like no matter what you do, John Foster is John Foster. And whatever genre, you brought it to you. You dressed like you. You sound like you.”
“Charisma. Charisma. Charisma. Smiling under that cowboy hat. That’s why you’re still here,” Luke Bryan said.
Fans seem to agree about John Foster. If streams and video views mean anything, the talented 18-year-old has a bright future ahead of him. In recent weeks of competition, his videos have been streamed more than any other American Idol hopeful this season.
