The Country Singer’s Set At Coachella Saw Her Reimagine “All My Ex’s Live In Texas”

It sure seems like everybody’s “Choosin’ Texas” these days…

Back in 1987, George Strait recorded a song that would go on to become one of his most enduring hits, “All My Ex’s Live In Texas.”

Now, nearly 40 years later, Kacey Musgraves is putting her stamp on Strait’s classic country tune.

Kacey Musgraves Performs Her Version Of George Strait’s Song At Coachella

At the 2026 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Saturday, April 18, Kacey Musgraves arrived on stage on horseback, passing a sign painted with the words “Welcome to the Middle of Nowhere,” which is a nod to the title of her upcoming seventh studio album, Middle of Nowhere.

Watch her entrance on horseback, here:

There, she performed four brand-new songs from Middle of Nowhere, which will be released on May 1, including “Dry Spell,” “Middle of Nowhere,” “Back on the Wagon,” and “Uncertain, TX.”

As the image of a gigantic Texas flag was projected on the screen behind her, Kacey told the audience, “You guys all know George Strait’s version of this song, well, I rewrote the verses from my perspective.”

George Strait’s version of the song, which was written by Sanger D. Shafer and Lyndia J. Shafer, finds George wittily listing a series of names of women with corresponding cities found in the Lone Star State.

Strait memorably sings:

“Rosanna’s down in Texarkana, wanted me to push her broom. Sweet Eileen’s in Abilene, she forgot I hung the moon. And Allison’s in Galveston, somehow lost her sanity. And Dimples who now lives in Temple’s got the law looking for me.”

Putting her gender-swapped spin on it, Kacey sang:

“Steven down in Stephenville drank too much Patrón. Richard down in Richardson won’t pick up the phone. Cody in Midlothian, now, he’s doing time. Sometimes you’ve gotta learn to Lubbock, or leave it all behind.”

Notably, the song “All My Ex’s Live In Texas,” is, itself, a riff on Willie Nelson’s 1968 song “Who Put All My Ex’s In Texas.”

Coincidentally, Nelson included his song on his seventh album, Texas In My Soul; and George Strait included his on his seventh album, Ocean Front Property. Kacey’s Middle of Nowhere will be her seventh album, even though she considers it her sixth, presumably excluding her 2016 Christmas album.

While her rendition of “All My Ex’s Live In Texas” is not presently numbered among the tracks on Middle of Nowhere, it would be a more than welcome inclusion.
