In June, news broke that Kelly Clarkson had filed from divorce from her husband Brandon Blackstock. The couple married October 20, 2013, and share two children: daughter River Rose (age six) and son Remington Alexander (age four). Brandon also has two children from his previous marriage, and Kelly treated them as if they were her own.
Kelly has publicly addressed the divorce a few times, including on her talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show. During the Season 2 premiere episode, she said:
“2020 has brought a lot of change also to my personal life. Definitely didn’t see anything coming that came. What I’m dealing with is hard because it involves more than just my heart, it involves a lot of little hearts. We have four kids and divorce is never easy. We’re both from divorced families. We know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts.”
Throughout this whole process, Kelly has been the most concerned about her children. While speaking with Extra and fellow Voice coach Gwen Stefani, Kelly said she’s been trying her best to help her kids through this tough time.
“We have a lot of help as far as therapists or child psychologists because we want to do it right. Everyone’s sad and it’s okay to be sad,” she said.
Since then, Kelly has been granted primary physical custody of River and Remington. People reported on the news, citing court documents that state “The Court finds that under the circumstances present in this case, the interest in providing stability and continuity for the minor children weighs in favor of Petitioner having primary custody.”
The documents indicate that River and Remington spent Thanksgiving with their father and will also be with him from December 19-December 25 at 2pm. When the children aren’t with him, Brandon will speak with them every day over video call “at a mutually agreed upon time.”
On the same day this news came out, The Kelly Clarkson Show shared a clip on its YouTube channel that shows Kelly discussing her divorce with author Glennon Doyle and former Voice coach Alicia Keys.
“Glennon you wrote about the public fallout from your divorce. I’m obviously going through one right now,” Kelly said. “It’s horrible.”
As Kelly has said all along, the divorce is all the more challenging because she wants to look out for River and Remington. “The hardest for me is the kids, that’s the hardest for me…it’s your babies that you worry about,” she said.
