While her hit single may sound like a dreamy love song, Kelsea Ballerini‘s latest single “Legends” was inspired by her own love story that ended with heartbreak. Originally writing the song from a place bitterness, the 23-year-old’s life has since changed in a big way. She fell in love with fellow country singer and fiancé, Morgan Evans.
“When I wrote [‘Legends’], it was in a break up. It was in this period of my life where I had so much bitterness,” Ballerini said according to Fox News. “It was a really healing song for me at the time.”
Recorded with an upbeat rhythm, Ballerini transformed “Legends” from a tragic breakup song into one reminiscent of the good times experienced during the relationship. So naturally, when picking the storyline for her cinematic music video, the singer wanted to keep with the tone of an enchanting love story that ended in heartbreak.
The video was directed by Jeff Venable and follows the life of a couple from the moment they first laid eyes on each other all the way to it’s tragic end. Throughout the video, you watch the couple take on life together, all the while Ballerini is seen singing on the picturesque ocean-side of Big Sur, California.
“Yeah, we were legends / Loving you, baby, it was Heaven / What everyone wondered, we’d never question / Close our eyes and took on the world together / Do you remember?” Ballerini sing.“We were crazy / Tragic and epic and so amazing / I’ll always wear the crown that you gave me / We will always stay lost in forever / And they’ll remember / We were legends.”
“Legends” was the lead single off her sophomore album.
