Meet Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter, Emmy Russell – She’s A Singer Too
Country music icon and “Coal Miner’s Daughter” Loretta Lynn passed away on October 4, 2022 at the age of 90. She left behind many loved ones, including her granddaughter, Emmy Russell.
Emmy is the daughter of Loretta’s daughter, Patsy Lynn Russell. Much like her legendary grandmother, Emmy loves to sing.
In 2016, a video surfaced online of a young Emmy singing “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry. Loretta was next to Emmy onstage, and was obviously proud of her performance.
After Loretta passed away, Emmy joined Willie Nelson’s son, Lukas Nelson, for a performance at Loretta’s memorial service. They covered “Lay Me Down,” a song that Loretta and Willie released in 2016.
Lukas and Emmy’s duet was nominated for a CMT Music Award for Performance of the Year.
Emmy Says Loretta Taught Her “To Love God”
It’s clear that Loretta played a huge role in Emmy’s life, and in fostering her love for music. While speaking with Fox News Digital at the CMT Music Awards on April 2, 2023, Emmy shared her grandmother’s greatest piece of advice:
“The most advice that she has given me throughout the years was to love God.” She continued to say, “She was such a lover of God and I think it was more of, ‘Listen to him and follow his voice.'”

Emmy continues to keep her grandmother’s legacy alive through her own music and performances. She made her Grand Ole Opry debut in April 2023, and released a new song, “Skinny,” in late August 2023.
Hear Emmy Russell Sing Her Grandma Loretta Lynn’s Signature Song, “Coal Miner’s Daughter”
More recently, Emmy shared a video on social media that shows her singing Loretta’s signature song, “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Emmy said the video was filmed some time prior, but she was “too emotional” to share it then:
“I did this as a tribute [and] was to[o] emotional to post or show anyone last year,” she said. “But this is me covering my grandmas song coal miners daughter as a tribute to her passing.. @tylerwardmusic helped me bring it to life.“
The video shows Emmy walking through what we assume to be Loretta’s home. She passes by framed pictures of Loretta, as well as some of her performance gowns.
To make things even more emotional, Emmy Russell’s performance also features audio of Loretta singing “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” You can enjoy the stunning tribute below.
We recently learned that Emmy is competing on the new season of American Idol. She’s sure to make her grandma proud!
