Luke Grimes is best known for his lead role as Kayce Dutton in the hit series Yellowstone.
When the series concluded after season 5 part 2, fans were eager for more. There were discussions about the show continuing beyond season 5, but it was ultimately canceled after Kevin Costner decided to leave.
Many cast members publicly expressed their interest in continuing the Dutton story through spinoffs. However, one actor was unsure about returning to his role. Grimes notably told People magazine that he believed he would no longer play Kayce Dutton, in his own words.ย
โOn the last day of shooting, I thought it was my last day as Kayce. It was over to me. It was seven years of playing a person that Iโll never see again, except for having his hat and jacket in my closet.โ
To his and his fans’ shock, it was announced that he would indeed return as Kayce He shared that. โIt wasnโt until probably three or four months after that [last day of shooting] that everything started aligning for the [spinoff].
A new spinoff of Yellowstone titled Y: Marshals starring Luke Grimes was picked up by CBS, and it follows Kayce after the sale of the Yellowstone ranch.ย
The official logline for the new series is,
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the regionโs war on violence.”

Why Did He Agree?
Grimes made it clear in a recent interview with People that he was not interested in continuing the story unless it was โinterestingโ and โbelievable.โ
When discussing the upcoming spinoff he said,
“We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable.โ
He shared that there would be no story if Kayce were โhappyโ and that he needed some form of interesting conflict. Gladly, according to Grimes the new series is “very good.”
โBut I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting, and it really roped me in, and I think it will rope the audience in as well.โ
Lastly, he revealed that the Yellowstone cast will be joining the new spinoff. Whether it will feature just his family or the entire cast remains unconfirmed, but fans can look forward to seeing their favorite Yellowstone characters return and be brought back to life.
When asked about his feelings regarding these changes, he said,
“It will be weird. There’s going to be some familiar faces, but there’s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we’ll see how that all feels.”
