Some of our favorite blooper reel moments involve sports mishaps. Thanks to Minnesota Twins outfielder Rob Refsnyder, we now had a new clip to add to our collection, but it didn’t come without some pain.
The blooper-worthy moment took place while the Twins were facing off against the Baltimore Orioles Monday night (May 31). Refsnyder was in centerfield when the Orioles’ Ryan Mountcastle stepped up to bat. Mountcastle hit a home run, but Refsnyder thought he had a chance at catching the ball. Unfortunately, Refsnyder was so honed in on catching the ball that he misjudged his distance from the fence and ran into it at full speed.
The collision knocked Refsnyder to the ground and, according to ESPN, the hit was hard enough to concern his teammates.
“They should take a look at that fence, to be honest,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He might have shaken himself up a little bit, but he flat-out ran into the wall. Everyone was checking on him.”
Refsnyder got the last laugh as he hit the game winning run later that night. The player has yet to make a statement about the failed catch that has everyone talking, but he was removed from Tuesday’s lineup and has left fans wondering if he was in fact injured in the mishap.
But, that didn’t stop the Orioles from having some fun at Refsnyder’s expense. Prior to Tuesday night’s game, the Baltimore ground crew immortalized Refsnyder’s collision with the wall by creating a tape outline of the player on the centerfield wall, complete with his jersey number lest there be any confusion about who the outline was.
