The Rain-Soaked Origins And Music Video For “I Got Better”
The music video for “I Got Better” was released on October 1, and it finds Morgan Wallen recovering from the wounds of the past. The rain falls upon him, cleansing him and renewing his spirit — and even healing him!
It wasn’t just the music video that had a rain-soaked energy though, as the song itself started with talk of a very significant rainfall: Noah’s flood.
When the lyrics to “I Got Better” were still being developed by Morgan and his team of writers — which included Blake Pendergrass, HARDY, ERNEST, Charlie Handsome, and Chase McGill — the Biblical account of the flood was on their minds.
In Genesis 7-8, the flood is detailed, with Scripture noting it lasted for 40 days and 40 nights as part of God’s plan to destroy the wickedness that had gone rampant.
Morgan is the son of a minister, and he prominently describes himself as a “believer” on his bio on social media, even noting elsewhere that allusions to the Bible are something he enjoys mixing into his songs.
Speaking with Billboard, Pendergrass recalled how ERNEST was riffing off that conversation of Noah’s flood and came up with one of the key sounds to the song, stating “He just sang that melody, like, ‘The world got bigger since the Bible got wrote.’”
While that initially worked for everyone, the song changed as they worked on it, but the melody remained the same, with the lyrics now saying, “I got better since you got gone.”
Speaking broadly on the song with Billboard in July, Morgan said, “It is one of my most personal songs on the entire record, and it’s a song that a lot of fans are relating to.”
As for the meaning of the lyrics, Morgan said:
“The girl could be anything to me. It wasn’t necessarily a relationship with another human. It could have been a relationship with anything in your life that was holding you back, and the only thing that you did was eliminate that, and everything became clearer in your life.”
