Kayce Dutton Embarks On A New Chapter

CBS’ new series, Marshals, marks the next chapter in the Yellowstone universe, centered solely on Kayce Dutton. The show follows John Dutton’s son as he takes a decisive turn in his life, joining an elite team of U.S. Marshals.

Actor Luke Grimes returned to the role and many familiar faces from Yellowstone are expected to make several appearances. The spin-off also introduces its first new cast member, Logan Marshall-Green, who will play Pete “Cal” Calvin, a close friend from Kayce’s military past.

Kayce has taken on a new role leading a U.S. Marshals team in Montana, with his grown son Tate (Brecken Merrill) joining him. The move comes after Kayce sold the family ranch and chose to start over, following the events of Yellowstone’s season finale, which brought the Paramount Network series to a close.

We learned in the first episode that Kayce lost his wife, Monica, after battling cancer. The episode later reveals that the illness may have been related to toxins dumped by a mine on the Broken Rock Reservation.

The loss appears to have deeply affected Kayce in a profound way as he admits to how her death has gravely impacted his life, and given him a renewed sense of purpose.

Riley Green Set To Make His Acting Debut

Longtime viewers are of course seeing a few familiar faces since the show is a follow-up, but it also introduces many brand-new characters as well.

One character, in particular, has country music fans especially eager to tune in.

When the first trailer for season one dropped, sharp-eyed viewers caught a fleeting moment that many might have missed, a quick glimpse of none other than Riley Green.

That split-second appearance was enough to spark major buzz, with fans speculating about the country singer’s potential role in the western drama. While it hinted at an acting debut, CBS stayed silent on the matter at the time. It wasn’t until late February that the network finally confirmed he would be part of the series.

Green’s character was teased in an Instagram photo showing him on set, and the post also revealed that his character’s name would be Garrett. Riley released his newest song, “My Way,” today (April 17th). The tune will also be featured in Sunday’s episode of Marshals.

Riley Discusses The Challenges Of Playing A Character With PTSD

During an interview with Military.com, Riley opened up about portraying a character out of his comfort zone. Garrett grapples with what Riley has called “extreme PTSD,” something he explained was really challenging to take on.

“That’s something I know nothing about beyond just relationships and friends that I’ve got that have served,” Riley shared.

Riley noted that real Navy SEALs were present on set during filming, serving as technical advisors while also sharing personal experiences that helped the actors better understand their roles.

“I think we were beyond fortunate that there were Navy SEALs on set that we could kind of lean into if we had questions,” the country star continued. “That was extremely helpful for me.”

Riley also hopes fans come away with a deeper sense of appreciation for the military, something he says he and the entire cast share. He added that service members endure things most people will “never be able to comprehend,” and that stepping into Garrett’s role gave him only a small glimpse of that reality.

“I think I speak for all the cast that we’re extremely appreciative of everybody who served in the military and the things that they go through that we probably will never… be able to comprehend. When you go, and you get to act on a show like this, it forces you to try to go there mentally.”

You can watch Riley Green make his acting debut on Marshals this Sunday (April 19).
