Years ago, George Jones asked a powerful question…”Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes?” The shoes he was referring to were the shoes of country greats such as Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, and Conway Twitty. Well, it looks like we found one artist who would be able to answer “I can,” to Jones’ question.
Jamie Lin Wilson is a wife, mother, and talented singer. Wilson first broke into the Texas country/folk scene as the co-lead vocalist of the group the Gougers. She eventually went on to join The Trishas, a band entirely comprised of female singer-songwriters.
In addition to her work with groups, Wilson has also pursued a solo career. She released her debut EP Dirty Blonde Hair in 2010, which set the foundation for her to release her first full-length album four years later. Called Holidays & Wedding Rings, the album was released in May 2015 and has received great praise.
Wilson’s talents have made her a fast-rising star in the country music community, one capable of filling the shoes that Jones sang about decades ago.
In April 2016, Wilson filmed a series of “Front Porch Sessions” that she shared with her fans on her YouTube channel. During these sessions, Wilson covered some of classic country music’s greatest songs, including Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter’s “Storms Never Last” and Guy Clark’s “Anyhow, I Love You.”
Another song that Wilson covered for her “Front Porch Sessions” series was none other than “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes.” With nothing but her acoustic guitar to accompany her, Wilson ended up delivering one of the most heartfelt and personal covers of the song that we’ve ever seen.
Filmed a few weeks after the death of Merle Haggard, Wilson prefaced her cover by saying that “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” had more relevance then than ever. That strong emotional connection allowed Wilson to put forth a powerful performance.
On her Facebook, Wilson writes that others have described her voice as having a “honeyed tenor twang that’s become known as one of the sweetest instruments in modern folk music.” We couldn’t think of a better way to describe Wilson’s voice ourselves. It’s sugary sweet with the perfect dose of grit, making it an ideal fit for country music.
