What Is The “Mic Drop” Button On The Voice?

The Voice has introduced a series of new rules and powers during Season 28, including the “Mic Drop” button.

The Mic Drop was introduced during the knockouts. An article on NBC’s website describes the purpose of the new button and how the coaches can use it.

…each Coach gets to hit their Mic Drop button for the one Artist on their team who truly rises above the rest. Once those four Artists are selected, fans at home will vote for their Mic Drop winner.

The winner of the Mic Drop receives a special prize. They’ll get to perform during the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day!

The Mic Drop winner will earn this once-in-a-lifetime prize even if they don’t win The Voice itself.

Team Reba Country Singer Aaron Nichols Wins His Knockout With Cover Of “Hurricane”

Coach Reba McEntire chose her Mic Drop winner during Monday night’s (November 17) episode of The Voice. She pressed the brand-new button for country artist Aaron Nichols, who delivered an impressive cover of the song “Hurricane.”

Levon Helm was the first artist to record “Hurricane,” followed by country rocker Leon Everette. Everette’s recording claimed the #4 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart.

The alternative rock group Band of Heathens covered the track in 2011. Their version peaked at #18 on the Hot Rock Songs chart.

“Hurricane” allowed Nichols to showcase the grit and power of his voice. Michael Bublé commented specifically on the former point, telling Nichols, “…I wish I had that gritty thing that seems to come so easily to you.

The Bakersfield native also received high praise from Snoop Dogg, who said, “[You’re a] star whether you win or not.”

McEntire ultimately chose Nichols as the winner of his knockout against Cori Kennedy. But beyond that, she also jumped to press her Mic Drop button for him! That proves just how much faith she has in his artistic talent.

I chose Aaron to move forward because he knows his lane, he’s very powerful in his lane, and he stays in it,” she said after his performance.

Stay tuned to see if the fans vote for Nichols to be the Mic Drop winner and recipient of the Rose Parade performance. In the meantime, revisit his knockout performance of “Hurricane” below.
