Those who tuned in to watch The Voice could always count on Blake Shelton and Adam Levine for a good laugh. The two coaches loved to bicker over contestants during the blind auditions, resulting in some of the most hilarious moments in the show’s history.

But as much as the two pretended to despise each other, Blake and Adam actually became close friends. When Adam left the show at the conclusion of Season 16, he couldn’t go without letting Blake know how much he meant to him:

I couldn’t hide my love for you if I tried,” Adam said on social media. “Seriously. I tried. Can’t do it. Our friendship is and always will be one for the books. Whatever this whole surreal experience was, Im just happy I got to experience it with you. You’re my brother for life.”

Blake, who had no idea Adam planned to leave the show, expressed his shock on Twitter. He also shared his love for Adam, and hurled one last insult at him for good measure.

Gonna miss working with that idiot,” Blake said.

Even though a year has passed since Adam last coached on The Voice, the rivalry between him and Blake was recently reignited after both of them released new songs on the same day.

On Friday (July 24), Adam’s band Maroon 5 released their new song, “Nobody’s Love.” That same day, Blake and his girlfriend (and fellow Voice coach) Gwen Stefani released a new duet, titled “Happy Anywhere.”

Both songs received a wealth of buzz, and quickly soared up the iTunes chart. Eventually, “Happy Anywhere” landed at the chart’s top spot, while “Nobody’s Love” was right on its tail in the #2 slot.

Blake shared a screenshot of the chart on Twitter, and wrote,  “My god Adam…. You are still a pain in my ass!!!!! Go away idiot!!!!

Proving he still loves to banter with his old pal, Adam responded on his Instagram Story, saying, “Eat s— cowboy! I’m comin’ for ya!

Then Gwen jumped into the equation to defend Blake from Adam. “@AdamLevine leave my boyfriend @blakshelton alone,” she said on her own Instagram Story.

Blake didn’t want to let things go, and kept poking fun at Adam. He created a pretend tweet to make it look like it came from Adam’s wife, Behati Prinsloo.

The pretend tweet read, “Wow… I hate to say it but Blake is way better at [The Voice] than my husband…

I hope this doesn’t affect their personal lives,” Blake joked.

Even though Blake and Adam aren’t working together on The Voice any longer, they made it clear their rivalry (and friendship) is still thriving!
