It was his first time attending the CMA Awards and this young singer couldn’t have been more thrilled. Showing up on the red carpet looking dapper as ever, American Idol runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson brought a different date than expected.

Hutchinson was on the 16th season of American Idol when he met his girlfriend, Maddie Poppe. The two faced off in the finale, ultimately with Poppe winning the title. Regardless of the outcome, their relationship continued to blossom outside of the singing competition. The young couple has been seeing each other ever since, looking happy as can be.

But to fans’ surprise, Hutchinson arrived at the red carpet hand in hand with someone other than Poppe. The young singer decided to bring his mother along for the big night. The night before the CMA Awards, Hutchinson posted a video of him telling his mom that she’d be his date for the ceremony. He made a promise to her that she’d be his first date if he ever got invited to the show, and he stuck to that.

After seeing his mother’s priceless reaction, the two were ready to strut across the floor. Hutchinson arrived in a black suit while his mom dazzled in a sparkly green gown. Although fans began to question if Hutchinson and Poppe were still together, Poppe posted an Instagram the same day, confirming all was good.
