Cody Johnson knows how to work a crowd and he proved it with a dynamic performance of his uptempo hit “That’s Texas” at CMA Fest 2024.

CMA Fest, formerly Fan Fair, occurred in Nashville in early June. The event’s biggest performances were filmed for a television special that aired Tuesday night, June 25. Hosted by Jelly Roll and Ashley McBryde, the show brought performances from some of the genre’s biggest stars like Kelsea Ballerini, Luke Bryan, Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, and many more.

One of the most anticipated performances of the week was from Cody Johnson. The Texas-born and raised singer opened this year’s event with an energy-filled set that included all of his previous hits and some new songs, including his latest single, “That’s Texas.”

Johnson made his CMA Fest main stage debut in 2023 and surprised the crowd with an appearance from Reba McEntire. The moment became one of the most talked about CMA Fest moments of that year as McEntire joined Johnson to sing her 1987 Grammy Award-winning hit, “Whoever’s In New England.”

This year’s set didn’t include any big surprises, but Cody delivered a performance to remember regardless.

CoJo kicked off his 2024 main stage appearance with a performance of “That’s Texas” – a toe-tapping tune that is an ode to his home stage. Prior to taking the stage, Cody told reporters that he chose to start his set with that song to make a point.

“The irony is not lost on me that I was told I would never make it in this town because I’m from Texas. And so tonight we’re gonna kick off with a song called ‘That’s Texas,'” Johnson told reporters. “We’re gonna bring a little flare because I feel like I’m at a place in my career where I can own that now and say, ‘You know what, boys? By God, I’m from Texas.'”
