Meet Cody Johnson’s Latest Collaborator, Mexican Singer-Songwriter Carin León
Country music superstar Cody Johnson just dropped an intoxicating new song with Carin León. The track is titled “She Hurts Like Tequila.”
León is a Mexican singer-songwriter from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. The 35-year-old artist has won multiple Latin Grammys and the Grammy Award for Best Música Mexicana Album in 2025.
León also shares several ties to the country music community. He made his Grand Ole Opry debut in February 2024.
Additionally, León was one of the featured performers during the 2024 CMA Country Christmas special. He sang “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” with Christian pop duo for KING & COUNTRY.

Then, on March 25, Cody Johson announced he and León would release their new collaboration, “She Hurts Like Tequila,” on March 28.
“I can’t wait for y’all to hear how smooth this song is, and it goes down just as nice as your favorite shot of tequila,” Johnson wrote in an Instagram post about the track.
The duo later shared a behind-the-scenes clip about the making of the song.
“I was literally sitting in a Mexican restaurant in my hometown, I hear a song come on the radio, and I went and asked my waitress, I said, ‘Who is this? Like I really like this song,‘” Johnson recalled in the clip.
The waitress told him León’s name, so Johnson downloaded a ton of his songs to his phone. Eventually, Johnson’s team reached out to León to see if he would be interested in a collaboration.
León met with Johnson in Las Vegas to write a song. They started with the idea of comparing the power of love to the strength of tequila, and the song took off from there.
“Tequila is good, but it will hurt you,” Johnson said when speaking about what inspired the song’s title.

Now, Johnson and León’s “She Hurts Like Tequila” is out in the world. The passionate song, performed in both English and Spanish, pulls you in from the first note and keeps you hooked on the duo’s every word.
As they sing:
“Every taste of her heavenly lips, is laced with her wickedness. No drink from a bottle could get me that high, she hurts like tequila.”
