More details are emerging about the deaths of legendary actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, who died on December 14.

Rob Reiner, the director behind some of Hollywood’s greatest films, was murdered at his home in Brentwood, California. His wife was also killed. The couple’s son, Nick, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders.

“He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, that being a knife,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a press conference following Nick’s arrest. “These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without possibility of parole or the death penalty.”

The Reiners’ death certificates, obtained by TMZ, share more insight into their tragic deaths.

The death certificates confirm that 78-year-old Rob and 70-year-old Michele died of “multiple sharp force injuries” inside their Los Angeles home on Sunday, Dec. 14, with the injuries being caused “with [a] knife, by another.” The document states that the couple died within “minutes” of sustaining their injuries.

Previous reports indicate that their daughter, Romy, discovered Rob’s body and called authorities. Michele was found shortly after.

The timing of the discovery was confirmed in the death certificates that state Rob was found “about 3:45 p.m.” and Michele was found at 3:46 p.m. The manner of death for both was listed as “homicide.”

Rob and Michele’s remains have been released to their family.

Rob and Michele Reiner’s children, Jake and Romy, issued a statement via their rep on Monday.

One day before their parents’ death certificates were made public, Jake and Romy Reiner issued a statement to PEOPLE through their rep. In the statement, the siblings thanked fans for their support and shared their plans for a memorial service.

“Jake and Romy Reiner remain grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received,” read the new statement. “They will share information about a memorial service honoring their parents at a later date.”

The siblings previously spoke out and shared their heartbreak over the tragic deaths of their parents, whom they called their “best friends.”
