Hayley Erbert Underwent Emergency Brain Surgery Last Week – Her Husband Derek Hough Posts Update On Her Condition
Following a performance in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday (December 6), dancer Hayley Erbert “became disoriented and was taken to the hospital.” Erbert was performing on her Symphony of Dance tour with her husband, Dancing with the Stars judge Derek Hough.
Derek shared a post on Thursday (December 7) saying that Haley “was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel.” She required an emergency craniectomy, which The Cleveland Clinic describes as “a type of brain surgery that relieves pressure on your brain.”
A surgeon removes a piece of the skull during a craniectomy. Patients then wear a helmet after surgery to protect their skull.
The Cleveland Clinc states that on average, a person’s skull heals “in a month or two” after a craniectomy. But, the person may be in recovery for several years. The Cleveland Clinic also states, “It’s common to need extended rehab and lifelong care after a craniectomy.”
Derek Says Haley “Is Now On The Long Road Of Recovery”
Derek and Haley’s Symphony of Dance tour was supposed to continue through December 30. The tour has since been postponed, with a statement on Derek’s website reading:
“We regret to inform you that Derek Hough: Symphony of Dance will be postponed. At the end of the Dec. 6th tour performance in Washington, D.C., Derek’s wife Hayley became disoriented and was taken to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy. She is in stable condition. Derek has asked for prayers and positivity during this time.“

On Friday (December 8), Derek shared a new update on Haley’s condition and recovery. He said:
“Hayley has always inspired me with her will, her strength, and her resilience and no more so than in the last 48 hrs. She is now on the long road of recovery. Words cannot express how grateful and thankful we are for the support and love that you have given us.”
Derek continued:
“The kindness that we’ve been shown in this incredibly unfathomable, and life changing time is immeasurable. The offers of assistance that have poured in have been so humbling and appreciated. Our hope is that as a family, we can somehow and some way pay it forward.”

Derek and Haley married on August 26, 2023 after eight years together. The couple started their Symphony of Dance tour shortly after they said “I do.”
We’ll be praying for Haley’s quick and complete recovery. And Derek will be in our prayers as well.
