A super heartwarming story comes out of Mayville, New York when the Chautauqua County Sheriff department shared a picture of an officer comforting a dog that had just been hit by a car.

The dog apparently got away from its owners and wandered off into the street where it made the mistake of playing in the road. It is unclear who hit the dog but with the icy roads, we can assume that even if they saw it and put on the breaks it may have not been enough to stop the vehicle from hitting it.

Regardless, once Sgt. Chris Howlett arrived on the scene he could see that the dog was scared and potentially hurt. To comfort the dog, Chris decided to be the ultimate gentleman and offer his jacket in the intense cold.

The owners of the dog were tracked down and they returned the pup. Chautauqua County Sheriff posted the picture of Chris and the dog to Facebook on December 20th and it got the attention of many media outlets who covered the story.

The department wrote on Facebook, “During times that there seems to be negative press towards law enforcement this shows a bit of compassion on the part of law enforcement and specifically our deputies. Sgt. Chris Howlett seen comforting a dog that had been struck by a vehicle.”

The post went on to say that the dog was reunited with its family and was taken to the veterinarian who said the dog only sustained minor injuries. The dog is expected to make a full recovery and Sgt. Chris Howlett became a hero in the community.
