Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jelly Roll have formed an unlikely friendship
Rapper-turned-country music star Jelly Roll seems to make friends everywhere he goes. Whether it’s with fans or fellow celebrities, his authenticity and welcoming nature positively impact those whose paths he crosses.
During an October visit to The Kelly Clarkson Show, Jelly Roll recalls the unknown impact that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had on him early in his career. He shared:
“He was a fan when I wasn’t worth being a fan of. He encouraged me at a time when I really wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing.”
Jelly Roll added that even though the encouragement did not come straight from the actor’s mouth, just knowing that he was a fan was enough to motivate him to keep pursuing music.
“The Rock” reveals how he and the “Save Me” singer developed a bond
On November 15th, Dwayne Johnson sat in the very same place where Jelly Roll had reflected on their unlikely connection just a month prior. Host Kelly Clarkson played the clip from Jelly Roll’s interview and gave “The Rock” the opportunity to respond.
He recalled stumbling upon one of Jelly Roll’s songs “about ten years ago” during a time when he was struggling. He shared the specific lyrics from the song titled “Only” that profoundly moved him. They read:
“What if the darkness inside of me has finally taken my soul?
What if the angels in heaven were sent to take me home?
Would they fight through the demons that I have in my life?
Lord, I’m believing eventually see the light.”
Jelly Roll released “Only (Addiction Kills)” in 2017 before he made the switch to country music. Listen to the song below.
Johnson adds that he and Jelly Roll got in touch following that experience and became “really good friends.” Acknowledging Jelly Roll’s recent and continuing success in country music, “The Rock” concludes:
“I love when good things happen to really good human beings. And he is one of them.”
