During the 23rd season of The Voice, which was Blake Shelton’s last season, the show went all out.
The Voice coaches have been subject to pranks before, and this particular season was no different! This time, it was actually Jimmy Fallon doing the pranking. He auditioned for the show with a cover of Michael McDonald’s “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near).” He even sang it like McDonald!
Once the stage lights finally turned on, the audience realized who was singing and they immediately started cheering, which got all four coaches’ attention.
His audition intrigued Kelly Clarkson enough to press her button for him and when she turned around, her reaction was priceless! Niall Horan turned shortly after her and he started laughing immediately. Chance the Rapper seemed more interested in Kelly and Niall’s reactions, so he turned as well, giving an incredible reaction.
Blake, however, wasn’t falling for the prank.
“Awful,” he was telling the audience with a smirk.
Now, Jimmy wasn’t having that, so he walked over to Blake and pressed his button, forcing the veteran coach to turn for him! But, apparently Blake knew right away that it was his good buddy Jimmy Fallon!
“It didn’t take me long to figure out that it was Jimmy Fallon, and there was no way I was going to hit my button. He does not deserve a chair turn on this show,” Shelton said. “Jimmy’s impersonation is the equivalent of walking up to Michael McDonald and slapping him in the face as hard as you can.”
Now, Blake and Jimmy go way back, so it’s no surprise that the “God’s Country” singer knew it was The Tonight Show host.
They have had some hilarious moments together, including when they had their palms read, when they rode Fallon’s Universal Studios ride together, when Shelton taught Fallon how to milk a cow, and of course, when Fallon took Shelton to try sushi for the very first time.
