It’s not every day that you get to hear a hit song’s original writer sing it.

In 2010, “A Little More Country Than That” was a number one song for country singer Easton Corbin. He became the first male solo artist in seven years to have his debut single hit number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. “A Little More Country Than That” was written by Wynn Varble, Don Poythress, and Rory Feek.

Feek, as most of y’all may know, was part of the duo Joey + Rory with his late wife Joey. They performed together from 2008 up until her death in 2016. Together, they competed on the CMT show Can You Duet and placed third.

They proved that you didn’t have to win the show to have a successful career in country music. Since then, they recorded eight albums, charted three singles on the Hot Country Songs chart, won Top New Duo at the ACM Awards in 2010, and won a Grammy in 2017 – after Joey’s death – for Best Roots Gospel Album.

More often than not, Joey sang lead with Rory singing harmonies, but in this particular performance of the Rory-penned “A Little More Country Than That,” Rory took the lead. Joey offered up some silky smooth harmonies, keeping the song as sweet and pure country as her husband intended when writing it.

Plucking his signature guitar with the words “We Love Country Music” written on it, Rory adoringly looked at his bride every time she joined him in perfect harmony. Just from the way they looked into each other’s eyes during this song, you can tell how much love their was between them.
