Kacey Musgraves got candid in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, about her marriage and eventual divorce to singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly.

Musgraves disclosed that her marriage “just simply didn’t work out. It’s nothing more than that. It’s two people who love each other so much, but for so many reasons, it just didn’t work. I mean, seasons change. Our season changed.”

In the interview, she reflected on how marriage changed her and had her questioning things, such as marriage.

“Part of me questions marriage as a whole, in general. I mean, I was open to it when it came into my life. I embraced it. I just have to tell myself I was brave to follow through on those feelings.”

Musgraves revealed she feels as though she lives best on her own, and she’s content in realizing that. In recent times she has been doing a lot of reflecting on growing up and how she was raised to please and make people happy. She admits she is trying to “unlearn” some of the things she was taught growing up that are no longer useful or that cross boundaries.

Musgraves and Kelly released a joint statement announcing their divorce in mid-2020.

“With heavy but hopeful hearts we wanted to put our own thoughts into the air about what’s happening. These kinds of announcements are always met with scrutiny and speculation and we want to stop that before it even starts. We believe that we were put into each other’s lives for a divine reason and have both changed each other infinitely for the better. The love we have for each other goes far beyond the relationship we’ve shared as husband and wife. It’s a soul connection that can never be erased,” the joint statement read. “We’ve made this painful decision together — a healthy decision that comes after a very long period of trying the best we can. It simply just didn’t work. Though we are parting ways in marriage, we will remain true friends for the rest of our lives. We hold no blame, anger, or contempt for each other and we ask for privacy and positive wishes for us both as we learn how to navigate through this”

The duo met in early 2016 when Musgraves went to The Bluebird Cafe to watch a friend perform. She was immediately intrigued by Kelly when he was performing on stage. She approached him after the show and gave him her number and told him she really wanted to write with him.

Kelly proposed to Musgraves on Christmas Eve in 2016, and they were married less than a year later in October 2017.
