The 56th annual CMA Awards show is underway at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena and the night has been full of stellar performances and surprises. One of the highlights of the event was Luke Combs‘ performance of his No. 1 song, “The Kind of Love We Make.”
The song was Combs’ 14th No. 1 at country radio and added another stirring love song to the singer’s already impressive music catalog.
“The Kind of Love We Make” was co-written by Combs, Jamie Davis, and Dan and Reid Isbell while on a trip to Montana.
“Jamie had the idea, and Dan and Reid brought it to me and I thought it was a killer melody,” said Combs. “It ended up being one of those songs that wrote itself. Dan, Reid and I are all having kids within a month of each other, so maybe this song had something to do with that.”
While Luke Combs has recorded his fair share of ballads during his career, including “Beautiful Crazy” and “Forever After All,” but “The Kind of Love We Makes” is an up-tempo ballad that takes things a bit farther with its racy lyrics.
In an interview with Billboard at the song’s release, Combs shared his wife’s reaction to the sultry slow song.
“She was like, ‘Geez,’ and she gave me one of those eye rolls,” Combs told Billboard with a chuckle. “We have a great relationship and we’re totally not afraid to make fun of each other either. We get a lot of laughs out of stuff like that. She’s great. She just takes everything with a grain of salt.”
Combs, who is the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year, is up for the night’s biggest award once again. He is also in the running for Male Vocalist of the Year (an award he’s won twice before) and Album of the Year for Growin’ Up.
