Riley Green may be a music superstar, but filming his new role in the Yellowstone spin-off, Marshals, still had the country heartthrob feeling nervous.

Marshals premiered on Sunday, March 1, and longtime fans were excited to see beloved character Kayce Dutton return.

For those who tuned in, you know that the series will follow his journey as he leads a U.S. Marshals team in Montana after the death of his wife, Monica. (See a full recap of Episode 1 here).

As the show goes on, viewers will also meet plenty of new characters introduced in the western drama. One that fans are especially excited about is Riley Green, who will be making his acting debut in an upcoming episode.

News of Green’s involvement first broke when eagle-eyed fans spotted what appeared to be a cameo in the season one trailer released in January. The moment was so quick, though, that if you blinked, you probably missed it.

It wasn’t until Thursday, February 19, that the show confirmed he would be taking on a role. A photo of Green’s character was shared on their official Instagram account.

He’ll be portraying a former Navy SEAL named Garrett, however it’s still unclear when he’ll first appear or how many episodes Green signed on for.

How Did Riley Green Get Cast in Marshals?

This is Green’s first-ever acting role, and it’s definitely a big way to step into that world.

But with no prior experience, how did he land the part?

Well, he and Luke Grimes (who plays Kayce Dutton) are friends in real life. Grimes also has his own country music career outside of acting, and the two have worked together before. So, when the opportunity to audition for Marshals came up, Green already had a bit of an in.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight ahead of the show’s premiere, Green shared that the entire experience happened very quickly.

“[I] flew out here and read for it on [a] Saturday and flew back and started filming for it on Monday. So it was a quick thing,” he said.

He also admitted that filming these episodes was the first time he had been nervous in quite a long time.

“It’s been a little while since I’ve been nervous,” Green told the outlet.

He continued, “When you walk onstage, everybody’s there to see me, it’s my show, everybody works for me… When you go on a set, nobody works for me, and you really get that feeling of ‘I’m the new kid… So it was cool to feel like that, it was a challenge, and to feel those nerves. Fortunately I was around some really great people.”

Green isn’t the first country singer to appear in one of Taylor Sheridan’s shows.

You may remember Lainey Wilson made her acting debut on Yellowstone, where she played a musician named Abby. Fans also saw Tim McGraw star in the miniseries 1883 alongside his wife, Faith Hill.

It turns out, McGraw even gave Green some advice on shifting from singing to acting.

“He was at my record label, and I was kinda picking his brain early on when I was thinking about doing some acting,” Green shared, “and man, he was such a great guy to talk to because he does such a great job with it and he’s such a great actor.”

Marshals will air every Sunday at 8 PM/ET, and stream the next day on Paramount+.
