Marshals Premieres On CBS
Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is back with a brand new series!
Marshals marks the next chapter in the Yellowstone universe, centered solely on Kayce Dutton. The series follows John Dutton’s son as he takes a decisive turn in his life, joining an elite team of U.S. Marshals.
Actor Luke Grimes is returning to the role and many familiar faces from Yellowstone are expected to make several appearances. The spin-off also introduces its first new cast member, Logan Marshall-Green, who will play Pete “Cal” Calvin, a close friend from Kayce’s military past.
Kayce has taken on a new role leading a U.S. Marshals team in Montana, with his grown son Tate (Brecken Merrill) joining him. The move comes after Kayce sold the family ranch and chose to start over, following the events of Yellowstone’s season finale, which brought the Paramount Network series to a close.
Marshals will air every Sunday on CBS at 8 PM, or you can stream the series on Paramount+.

Kayce Dutton’s New Beginning
The season’s premiere episode, “Piya Wiconi,” begins after the end of Yellowstone, with Kayce and Tate trying to settle into a quiet life on the East Camp ranch. Marshals opens with a scene of Kayce and Cal running through the woods. We soon learn Kayce is actually dreaming, as he frantically wakes up alone in bed.
A major bombshell is revealed immediately – as Kayce’s beloved wife, Monica, has tragically died from cancer. The episode later reveals that the illness may have been related to toxins dumped by a mine on the Broken Rock Reservation. The loss has deeply affected Kayce in a profound way as he admits to how her death has gravely impacted his life.
Cal, now leading a team of U.S. Marshals in Montana, convinces Kayce into a dangerous mission that cuts across the state’s most unforgiving terrain. Drawn back to a life he once tried to escape, Kayce is forced to decide whether to remain on the land he fought for or once again wear a badge.

The Marshals Embark On Their First Case
The new Marshal team jumps into their first case, after a bomber targeted the Broken Rock Reservation. The bomb seriously injures Broken Rock chairman Thomas Rainwater (played by Gil Birmingham). Kayce, Cal, and the rest of the team, including Belle (played by Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Santos (Ash Santos), and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means), head into the rugged terrain to pursue possible leads.
The team initially believes the homemade device was planted by Jim Kane. Jim is a member of the reserve who’s wife and daughter were taken hostage. However, they quickly realize he only particiapted in the plot to try and retrieve his family.
Ultimately, the Marshals discover the bomb plot was initially planned by the director of Fish, Game and Parks, Owen Kilborn. Kayce heroically rescues Kane’s family, and Kilborn is killed during the confrontation.
Before his death, Kilborn manages to send a chilling warning to Kayce, implying that the bomb is only part of a much larger and more dangerous threat still looming.

Kayce’s New Mission Is Deeply Personal
Reflecting on the mission, Kayce returns to the team’s headquarters where he tells Rainwater and Mo (played by Mo Brings Plenty) that joining the Marshals gave him a renewed sense of purpose.
Mo assures Kayce that he’s now given the Kane family a second chance, and the U.S. Marshals could play the same role in his life.
“All the wolves out there, we need sheepdogs more than ever, Kayce,” Mo told him.
Kayce later visits Monica’s memorial, promising his late wife that he will begin to try again.
“You always told me to fight for the life I want, but I had the life I wanted. It was with you. I’m changing paths, going to try and find a new beginning for me and Tate.”
He’s seen in the final episode wearing a Marshals badge on his belt, setting a new path forward indeed.
