Sam Elliott Takes Home SAG Award For Outstanding Performance In “1883”

Sam Elliott has been nominated for a surprisingly small number of awards over the course of his lengthy career. Even more surprising is the fact that out of those nominations, he previously only had a few wins.

Elliott finally added another trophy to his tally following the 2023 SAG Awards on Sunday (February 26). He won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for his performance in the Yellowstone prequel series 1883.

Elliott played Shea Brennan in the series, the hardened cowboy who was tasked with leading the Duttons’ travel party across the West.

Elliott received a wealth of praise for his performance in the series. So it’s nice to see his hard work being rewarded on a larger scale!

The weight of the moment wasn’t lost on Elliott. During his acceptance speech, he said:

“I wonder if anybody else is gonna read anything tonight. I do this because I didn’t expect to be up here. I only have 43 seconds to say this and I’ve already wasted a half of that…What can I say in 45 seconds, after just receiving the most meaningful acknowledgement of my 55-year career from a group of my peers? Many of whom I don’t even know, or know only from afar as a fan who respects their work. Not time to say enough.”

Elliott went on to say that he will “treasure” his SAG Award “as a constant reminder of ‘1883’ and what a gift it was for all of us on both sides of the camera.” He offered a shout-out to his castmates, telling them “there’s a piece” of the award for them too.

He ended his speech by saying:

“Thank you Taylor Sheridan for your brilliant script, and David Glasser, and everyone else at 101. Thank you to Paramount, thank you to my team, and thank you to my wife, my beautiful Katharine, my partner through thick and thin, and the mother of our beautiful daughter. Thank you ladies and gentlemen.”
