When Bindi Irwin spoke to The Bump about her pregnancy with her first child, she told the publication she thought her late father, Steve, would have loved being a grandpa.
“I always joke that if he was still here we’d never see our baby because he’d take her on all kinds of adventures!” she said. “I want to make sure our baby girl gets to know my dad and thankfully we have many documentaries and photos we can share with her. I think she’ll love getting to watch footage of Dad working with all kinds of animals and learning about his legacy.”
Bindi and her husband, Chandler Powell, waited to choose a name for their daughter until she was born. But throughout Bindi’s pregnancy, they called their daughter Baby Wildlife Warrior in honor of Steve.
“My dad was the first person to create the term ‘Wildlife Warrior,’” Bindi told The Bump. “Being a Wildlife Warrior means to stand up and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.”
Bindi and Chandler’s baby girl finally arrived on Thursday (March 25). They named her Grace Warrior Irwin Powell, with her first name being in honor of Bindi’s great-grandmother. Her middle names “Warrior Irwin,” are in honor of Steve.

After Bindi and Chandler announced their daughter’s birth, Bindi’s mother, Terri, celebrated the news in a social media post of her own.
“Love is not a big enough word,” Terri said about her granddaughter. “My heart is so incredibly happy.”
Terri then spoke about Steve, saying how she believed he would have been full of pride following the birth of their first grandchild. “And I know that Steve would be beyond proud,” she said.
Terri went on to describe how Grace will continue to carry on Steve’s legacy, writing, “Grace is the next generation to continue his mission and message of conservation. She chose her parents wisely. Bindi and Chandler are already the best parents ever!”
