The buildup to Trace Adkins‘ new album Something’s Going On is finally over! Adkins’ first record in four years, Something’s Going On shows a more reflective side to the singer than we’ve ever seen before.
That side of Adkins is perhaps best showcased in his latest single, “Watered Down.” Although Adkins didn’t write the song, its message of slowing things down as you grow older is something that resonated with him. The song spoke to Adkins right away, and he knew he had to cut it for his next project. He explained his connection to it during an event in Nashville:
“When I heard this song, I was like, ‘Well, that’s my current state in a nutshell. That’s where I’m at’…I’m still crazy – you’ve just got to temper it a little bit.'”
Adkins’ connection to “Watered Down” was made clear during his live performance of the song during an appearance on TODAY on Friday (March 31). He strummed along on his acoustic guitar and his band backed him up by playing a soft accompaniment. The toned-down style of the song gives it a more personal feeling, as your focus is directed straight to Adkins.
This performance proves that Adkins is still a powerful force in country music. He’s shown his versatility by singing rowdy tunes like “Swing” and then turning around and singing something emotionally profound, like “Watered Down.”
Adkins is sure to win his way into your heart with his performance of his new single. In case you missed it live, you can catch it in the video below.
While you’re at it, be sure to snag your copy of Something’s Going On if you haven’t already. There are many other tracks in addition to “Watered Down,” including the seductive title track and a tribute to our servicemen and women titled “Still a Soldier.”
