Country music star Trisha Yearwood will have you thinking about your first love in her hit song “She’s In Love with the Boy.” The song takes you on a journey through young love in a classic tale of fatherly disapproval who doesn’t think his daughter’s boyfriend is “worth a lick.”

“Her daddy says he ain’t worth a lick,” Yearwood sings. “When it comes to brains, he got the short end of the stick. But Katie’s young and man, she just don’t care. She’d follow Tommy anywhere.”

The song follows a teenage couple, Katie and Tommy, who become engaged after Tommy proposes with his high school “class ring.” Katie’s father fiercely opposes the relationship and isn’t afraid to voice his opinion.

The two return home late one night from a date and Katie’s father angrily approaches Tommy when Katie’s mother jumps to Tommy’s defense to reveal that her father once disapproved of him the way he disapproves of Tommy.

“My daddy said you wasn’t worth a lick, when it came to brains you got the short end of the stick” sings Trisha from the perspective of Katie’s mother. “But he was wrong and honey you are too, Katie looks at Tommy like I still look at you.”

The song was released in March of 1991 as the premiere single from her debut self-titled album.

“She’s In Love With The Boy” hit number one on both the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and Canada RPM Country Tracks. The song was Yearwood’s first of many number ones hits on the country chart. It was just the beginning of a legendary career!
