An incredible YouTube channel called Wildlife Behind Our Home in Hendersonville, NC shares many amazing videos of wildlife they capture on their hunting cams located on one acre of land behind their home.
Their videos show, “Bear, bobcat, coyote, fox, raccoon, deer, possum, turkey vultures and more!” according to the Wildlife Behind Our Home in Hendersonville, NC YouTube channel.
The Rare Black Coyote
One thing they captured on film that’s extremely rare for folks to see is a black coyote. The footage they shared showed a minute and a half video of the beautiful creature walking around sniffing things and rolling around on the ground in front of the camera.
Wildlife Behind Our Home must have put something on the ground right there in front of the camera because the coyote really liked it. He rolled around rubbing it all over himself. The video is really one of the best, up-close, videos ever taken of a black coyote.
They captured footage of “one of rarest animals in america by sheer luck,” according to Apost.
Why Are Black Coyotes Rare
The reason why black coyotes are considered rare is because there is not much research on them. They are not commonly seen by hunters and wildlife photographers and if they are, there’s usually not a picture taken. However, there is some research on the animal.
According to Southeastern Naturalist, out of every 75-100 coyotes that were trapped in southern Georgia in 2014, two to three of them were black. Meaning about 2% of the population were black coyotes. The research document also showed that Mississippi recorded only 0.5% of coyotes being black.
