Emmy Russell’s rendition of “Choosin’ Texas” will have you two steppin’ around the room.
On Monday, December 8, the American Idol alum shared a video on her social media giving a try at Ella Langley’s latest release.
Langley officially released “Choosin’ Texas” on October 17, after teasing the song for several months during her live shows.
Fans have been loving the song, and it’s one of Langley’s favorites too, especially because she co-wrote it with her music idol, Miranda Lambert. In fact, Lambert was the inspiration behind the entire track.
The song is actually based on a wild experience Lambert once had, and during one of Langley’s first live performances of “Choosin’ Texas,” she shared the story behind the song:
“She told me she had a pet kangaroo, and she was doing something, she was driving down a dirt road, and the kangaroo was in the back seat, and the dog was in the front seat. There was a lot going on,” she explained.
Langley continued, “Then she got pulled over with a kangaroo in the passenger seat. And I was like, ‘This story’s as good as I thought it would be.’ She said the lady cop pulled her over, and she’s like, ‘Of course I have Texas plates on the back of my car.’”
After hearing all of that, Langley couldn’t help but turn it into a lyric, which led to another, and before she knew it, she had an entire song.
“I was walking to the bathroom and I started to go, ‘She’s from Texas, I can tell by the way he’s two-steppin’ around the room.’ And Miranda was walking behind me to the bathroom, a separate one, and she was like, ‘Wait a minute…And from there, I think the song fell out in about 30 minutes…”

Emmy, who competed on Season 22 of American Idol and is also the granddaughter of country legend Loretta Lynn, shared her cover of “Choosin’ Texas” on Instagram.

In the clip, she is sitting in what looks like her living room as she plays the song on the piano. Emmy belts out the lyrics with her own twist on the notes, and slows the song down a bit.
“Just when I thought I got him to fall in love with Tennessee / I shoulda known better than to take him back to Abilene / I put him right back into her arms / I wasn’t a match for that kinda spark / She’s from Texas, I can tell by the way He’s two steppin’ ’round the room”
In the caption, she said that she’s “been singing this song everyday.”
Fans couldn’t get enough of Emmy’s rendition. Many praised her performance, leaving comments such as:
