One of the most anticipated, and subsequently most successful, country music albums of 1978 was the duet album Waylon & Willie. Outlaw country legends Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson came together to record 11 songs including “Lookin’ for a Feeling”, “Don’t Cuss The Fiddle”, “Gold Dust Woman”, “The Wurlitzer Prize (I Don’t Want to Get Over You)”, and “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”.
The album went No. 1 and stayed there for ten weeks, but remained on the charts for a total of 126 weeks – that’s almost two-and-a-half-years! Willie and Waylon’s “Mammas” duet has gone down as one of country music fans’ all-time favorite collaboration. Their rendition of Ed Bruce’s 1976 Top 15 song won them a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo r Group.
Since Waylon’s passing in 2002, it has been hard to see Willie perform this song alone, but when he does take on new duet partners, he chooses them wisely. In this particular video, he enlisted his son, Lukas, to sing Waylon’s parts as well as the harmony, and you will not be disappointed.
We’re sure they made Waylon proud with this one. Watch it below.
