The 2022 CMA Awards were held on Wednesday, November 9. The ceremony was broadcast on ABC and was hosted by Luke Bryan and Peyton Manning.

Five of the biggest country songs from the past year scored nominations in the Single of the Year category. The Single of the Year award is given to the recording artist(s), the producer(s), and the mix engineer(s). Single of the Year differs from the similarly named Song of the Year category in this regard. The Song of the Year award is only given to the songwriters.

The nominees for Single of the Year at the 2022 CMA Awards were as follows:

  • “Buy Dirt” – Jordan Davis (featuring Luke Bryan)
  • “half of my hometown” – Kelsea Ballerini (featuring Kenny Chesney)
  • “Never Wanted to Be That Girl” – Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde
  • “Til’ You Can’t” – Cody Johnson
  • “You Should Probably Leave” – Chris Stapleton

Last year the Single of the Year Award went to Chris Stapleton for “Starting Over.” He’s won the award twice, with his other win being for “Broken Halos” in 2018.

All of the other nominees have never won Single of the Year before. In fact, it’s the first time Jordan Davis, Luke Bryan, Kelsea Ballerini, Carly Pearce, and Cody Johnson have been nominated in the category. This is Kenny Chesney‘s fourth overall nomination and Ashley McBryde‘s second.

Did Stapleton secure another win this year? Or was the Single of the Year award given to someone else?

It turns out, the 2022 CMA Single of the Year winner is…””Til You Can’t” by Cody Johnson.

Johnson thanked songwriters Ben Stennis and Matt Rogers for writing one of the greatest country songs he’s ever heard. He said he was honored to sing it.

This was the second time Johnson won a CMA Award for “‘Til You Can’t.” Before the ceremony, it was announced that the song’s official music video won the award for Music Video of the Year.

Congratulations to Johnson and everyone who made “‘Til You Can’t” an award-winning success!
