Carrie Taps Into Emotion In Past Two Singles

On April 11, 2018, Carrie Underwood gave her fans the first taste of her then-upcoming album, Cry Pretty. She released the album’s title track as its lead single, which was met with an overwhelmingly postive response.

That response was enhanced by a number of powerful performances Underwood delivered shortly after the song’s release, including ones at CMA Fest and the Grand Ole Opry.

Before the end of its run, “Cry Pretty” reached the fifth spot on the Hot Country Songs chart and crossed over to claim the 48th position on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100

At the end of the year, it was named as the #1 best country song of 2018 by Rolling Stone.

Following the success of “Cry Pretty,” Underwood released another emotional song as the album’s second single. That track, “Love Wins,” was released as a single on August 31, 2018. A pregnant Underwood later delivered a powerful performance of the song at the CMA Awards in November.

“Love Wins” was also a commercial success, peaking at the 11th spot on the Country Airplay chart and claiming the 83rd position on the Billboard Hot 100. The single carried Underwood through the holiday season and into 2019, when fans started expecting another new release.

A Fun-Loving New Single Is On The Scene

But one never came. Before fans knew it, nearly eight months had passed and Underwood still had no new single to offer after “Love Wins.”

She finally gave everyone an idea of what to expect from her next when she performed the song “Southbound” during the ACM Awards in early April. Underwood could be seen singing the fun-loving summer jam at a pool party setting before she moved into the venue to close out her performance.

While some people just thought that Underwood picked the song because of its party vibe (fitting for the awards’ location in Las Vegas), others wondered if she planned to release it as her next single. Those suspicions were finally confirmed when it was announced that “Southbound” will be Underwood’s third single released off of Cry Pretty.

While “Cry Pretty” and “Love Wins” were all about appealing to emotion, “Southbound” is just about having fun. That vibe certainly came through in her ACM Awards performance of the song, which you can watch below.

What do y’all think of Underwood’s new single? We think it’s destined to be one of the biggest country hits of the summer!
