Corey Comperatore passed away after a senseless shooting at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania that is being called a failed assassination attempt.
Former President Trump was shot in the ear by the 20-year-old gunman, two others were injured, and Corey lost his life. Corey, a beloved fire chief, died shielding his family after telling them, “Get down!”
After Trump was tackled by Secret Service members, he was taken off stage while yelling, “Fight” to his constituents.
On July 15, the New York Postreported that Corey’s widow, Helen Comperatore, had turned down a call of condolence from President Joe Biden, saying, “I didn’t talk to Biden. I didn’t want to talk to him. My husband was a devout Republican and he would not have wanted me to talk to him.”
She did, however, take former President Trump’s call one day later.
According to the New York Post, Helen Comperatore revealed on her personal (and private) Facebook account that Trump had called her.
“He was very kind and said he would continue to call me in the days and weeks ahead,” she wrote. “I told him the same thing I told everyone else. He left this world a hero and God welcomed him in. He did not die in vain that day.”
When Trump broke his silence on the shooting, he spoke about Corey, saying, “We pray for the recovery of those who were wounded, and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.”
Trump continued, “In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win.”
Since the event that took Corey’s life, a GodFundMe has been set up for him and the other victims.
There are actually two GoFundMe’s set up, one for all the victims – which has raised over $5 million – and one specifically for Corey’s daughter, Allyson.
The GoFundMe benefitting Alyson Comperatore has raised $1,264,515 as of press time, with over 2,000 people donating.
