Darius Rucker Joins Other Country Stars For Virtual Concert To Honor Healthcare Workers

On June 3, 2020, country music’s brightest stars came together to honor those who have gone the extra mile to care for and serve others during the COVID-19 pandemic. CMT united these artists through a televised special called CMT Celebrates Our Heroes.

They are health care workers, innovators, educators, food providers, delivery drivers, sanitation and utility workers, our armed forces, and first responders,” an article from CMT states about the “heroes” honored in the special. “All of these men and women are putting their lives at risk for the rest of us.”

The special featured musical performances from a number of high-profile guests, including Luke Combs, Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, and Little Big Town. Other artists, including Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, and Keith Urban, participated by offering testimonials.

Some artists opted to perform their own songs, choosing relevant or encouraging tunes such as “Bluebird” in Lambert’s case or “Six Feet Apart” from Combs.

Other artists paid tribute to country legends with cover performances. One of those CMT cover performances came from Darius Rucker, who sang Randy Travis’ love song “Forever and Ever, Amen.”

“Forever and Ever, Amen” was released in 1987 as the first single off of Travis’ album Always & Forever. The song topped the Hot Country Singles chart, and became the third #1 song of Travis’ career.

To give “Forever and Ever, Amen” a fitting backdrop in light of current events, photos of couples wearing face masks flashed behind Rucker while he covered the song. Some of the photos showed newlywed couples celebrating their marriage in the midst of the pandemic.

Seeing these images while Rucker sang about everlasting love was an emotional thing to witness. It really drove home the message that even when life throws hardships our way, love will win out in the end.
