Hear Dwight Yoakam’s New Duet With Post Malone, “I Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye (Bang Bang Boom Boom)”

Country music icon and actor Dwight Yoakam just released his first new song since 2016…a collaboration with Post Malone. It’s titled “I Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye (Bang Bang Boom Boom).”

While the song’s release on Friday (September 6) surprised fans, the partnership between Dwight and Post did not. The two singers have been friends for years.

In 2018, Post sang “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere” with Dwight on his Bakersfield Beat SiriusXM channel. They also sang a cover of Merle Haggard’s “The Bottle Let Me Down.”

Earlier this year (2024), Post surprised the crowd at the Stagecoach music festival by bringing Dwight onstage to sing “Little Ways.” They collaborated again in July during Dwight’s concert at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. During that show, they sang “Little Ways,” “Guitars, Cadillacs,” “Fast As You,” and “It Won’t Hurt.”

Post and Dwight’s collaborations have always been well-received. So it makes sense that they finally decided to record a duet, “I Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye.”

The track has that signature country-waltz style that is heard in many of Yoakam’s songs. Post fits right in with him, and they take turns singing lines in the chorus.

This release comes in the midst of an exciting time for Malone. He recently made his Grand Ole Opry debut and released his first country album, F-1 Trillion, on August 16.

Dwight Yoakam Reveals Plans To Release A New Album…His First Since 2016

On top of releasing his new song with Post Malone, Dwight Yoakam also announced the upcoming release of a new album. The project, titled Brighter Days, will be Dwight’s first album since 2016.

Billboard reports that Brighter Days will be released on November 15.

The album will contain 12 new songs that Dwight wrote or co-wrote. Some of those original songs are titled “California Sky,” “Time Between,” and “Wide Open Heart.”

Brighter Days will also feature two cover songs, including a rendition of the Carter Family’s “Keep on the Sunny Side” and a version of Cake’s “Bound Away.”

Billboard confirmed that Post Malone is the only guest artist featured on Dwight Yoakam’s new album. You can listen to their duet, “I Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye,” in the clip below.
