The 2020 CMT Music Awards were held on Wednesday night (October 21) after being rescheduled from their original date in June. Things looked a little different this year, as award winners accepted their trophies virtually.
Later in the night, the winner of the Collaborative Video of the Year award was announced. And the trophy went to Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani for their music video for their #1 duet, “Nobody but You.”
As of press time, the “Nobody but You” music video has over 48 million views. But despite its popularity, Shelton and Stefani were still shocked to learn they had won the award.
Their surprise was understandable. After all, they were nominated in a pretty stacked category, which included Dan + Shay‘s “10,000 Hours” collaboration with Justin Bieber and Carly Pearce and Lee Brice’s “I Hope You’re Happy Now.”
“This is unbelievable,” Shelton said in their acceptance speech. “When I saw, I told Gwen that when I saw who the other nominees were in our category, literally it was like, well that would have been cool but I don’t know what our chances of beating Justin Bieber are.“
But they won, and Stefani was amazed…especially since this marked her first time winning a country music award! “This is like, what is happening in my life?” she exclaimed.
The pop/ska singer also expressed her disbelief on social media. She shared Shelton’s post celebrating their win, and added her own comments:
“@blakeshelton wow weeeeeee NEVER IN MY WILDEST DREAMS?!!!!!!” she wrote. “thank u to everybody that listened and voted we see you guys out there working hard for us and we appreciate it!!“
