Country star Kacey Musgraves recently opened up her Nashville home for a feature in Architectural Digest. During the tour of her abode, various pieces of memorabilia were on display, including a unique gift from Willie Nelson.
The 33-year-old “Rainbow” singer purchased a 3500-square-foot home in Nashville following her divorce from Ruston Kelly in 2020. She told AD that the renovation and redecoration of the property was like a new beginning for her.
“I wanted a place that felt like me,” she says, “where I could express myself without having to think about another person and what they might want.”
The now-mostly-white house is a blank canvas of sorts for the singer who has a penchant for estate sale and antique shop finds.
“When I’m on the road, instead of staying locked away on the bus, I’ll get up, get coffee, and find the nearest antiques store. There’s something really interesting to me about taking ownership over an object that meant a lot to someone else, and kind of becoming the new steward of whatever it is,” Musgraves said.
In addition to unique second hand treasures, she also keeps some personal items on display, like photo of her mom as a teenager wearing a cheerleading jacket and smoking a cigarette. You’ll also find a jewelry box filled with pieces of blue eggshells, a symbol of a dream her boyfriend Cole Schafer had when they first started dating.
Perhaps the item country music fans would find most interesting is a framed half-smoked join given to her by Willie Nelson when the then-country newcomer was touring with the legend in 2014.
“He rolled this huge fatty,” she recalled, “and we all sat around and smoked it with him, and then he said, ‘Save the rest for another time,’ and I did.”
Willie Nelson and Kacey Musgraves have shared a close friendship for years. In 2015, Nelson joined Musgraves on her album Pageant Material and A Very Kacey Christmas.
In 2019, the friends came together again to perform “Rainbow Connection” from the 1979 film The Muppet Movie at the Country Music Association Awards.
