Kenny Chesney is mourning the loss of his beloved rescue dog, Ruby, who was also known as “Da Ruba Girl.”
Kenny shared the news about Ruby’s passing on social media. He said:
“Today we lost Da Ruba Girl. Ruby lived her life never holding anything against anybody. She had an ancient, calming soul. She was honest and authentic, she was a protector, she took a warrior’s path in the journey of her life.”
Kenny mentioned how Ruby “loved the sun and how it felt on her face.” He said that’s something he had in common with her.
“Today I know Ruby is sitting somewhere with the sun on her face happy and grateful to have slipped her skin and body that was full of cancer,” Kenny wrote.
Kenny went on to speak about the bond Ruby shared with his other dog, Poncho. “They were partners in crime and never spent a day apart,” he said.
He said Ruby was “forever grateful” to be rescued from a shelter by his longtime partner, Mary. “But really they ended up saving each other,” he said.
His tribute continued:
“I’m going to miss her, especially in the mornings. That’s when she and I really connected. So bye-bye, Ruby. You were a very good girl. We loved you and thank you for teaching us how to love unconditionally. You were one heaven of a dog. ‘She’ll be known all over the world… as ‘Da Ruba Girl.’“

Ruby actually inspired a song of Kenny’s, which he titled “Da Ruba Girl” in her honor.
“Da Ruba Girl” has never been released on an album, and isn’t available to stream either. It only plays on Kenny’s No Shoes Radio channel on Sirius XM. So if you’ve ever tuned in to the station before, you’ve likely heard the song.
Kenny also shared a sweet video that shows Ruby licking his face. He said it was always their “morning ritual” to share a moment together like that. You can see the video below.
Our hearts go out to Kenny, Mary, and Poncho during this sad time. It’s clear Ruby will be dearly missed.
