Why Do People Keep Throwing Things At Singers During Concerts?
Megan Moroney is one of the latest singers to be forced to dodge an object thrown at them during a concert—in her case, a hat.
There seems to be a recent increase in instances of fans throwing things at artists performing onstage. In June 2023, a concertgoer threw a bracelet at “half of my hometown” singer Kelsea Ballerini, hitting her eye. Ballerini left the stage for a few minutes before she returned and encouraged her audience not to throw things.
Last March, Morgan Wallen had a drink thrown at him during a concert. The fan who threw the drink was kicked out of the venue.
Then, in July of this year (2024), Wallen was performing his song “Cowgirls” during a show when a fan threw their cell phone at him. The phone hit Wallen’s shoulder.
Wallen picked up the phone, tossed it offstage, and continued singing.
TODAY outlined many other instances when fans have thrown objects at performers.
“Meant to Be” singer Bebe Rexha was hit in the face with a cell phone thrown at her during a concert in June 2023. Harry Styles walked offstage after being struck in the eye with an unknown object, rumored to be a rose, thrown at him during a show in July 2023.
Megan Moroney Avoids Hat Thrown At Her While Singing
Even more recently, country artist Megan Moroney was forced to dodge a hat thrown at her during a show in Birmingham, UK.
The 26-year-old singer, who just finished touring with Kenny Chesney, was performing her vulnerable song “28th of June.” Mid-song, an attendee threw a hat directly above Moroney’s head.
TikTok user bsxap uploaded a video of the incident. Moroney, who was sitting at the time, quickly ducked to dodge the hat. She looked stunned when she turned back to look at the crowd.
However, Moroney only paused momentarily before jumping back into singing.
Another TikTok video shows Moroney flipping off the hat-thrower as he was being kicked out of the show. Moroney clarified why she did so in the video’s comments, writing:
“Weird way to title this vid & not include context. A guy threw a hat at me & it scared the h— out of me. I gave a finger when he was getting kicked out & continued to be obnoxious. Hope this helps!”
