Murfreesboro Police K9 Saves The Day: Stranded Dog Rescued From East Tennessee Tree

The devastation of Hurricane Helene continues, but amid the chaos, one glimmer of hope shines through. A lost dog was found.

East Tenessee was hit with heavy flooding during the tropical storm. According to WKRN  there was:

“Extreme flooding washed out roads, homes, and businesses all along the southern Appalachians. All this damage is being blamed on Hurricane Helene, even though some locations recorded more than a foot of rainfall well before Helene made landfall.”

The Dog That Saved The Day

K9 Kari and her handler, Officer Angela Alexander, of the Murfreesboro Police Department, were out on October 2nd when the incredible rescue occurred. Kari, the canine hero, was assisting the Kingsport Fire Department in a search of the flooded areas.

The officials reported that during their search, Kari suddenly started “barking uncontrollably.” The bloodhound led the team to the Nolichucky River and stopped under a nearly 20-foot tall tree. When the officers addressed the situation, they saw the stranded dog perched on the tall branches.

The firefighters were resourceful in their rescue, as the dog was too high to climb. Luckily, they found a discarded ladder in the flood wreckage and saved the dog. The dog was fed and handed over to Animal Rescue, safe and sound.

Thanks to Kari, the police department was happy to report that the dog was reunited with its owners on October 3rd. The rescue could not have happened without the brilliant canine.

Alexander, Kari’s handler, was surprised by the dog’s response because, according to Alexander, Kari is normally not fond of other canines. In her own words: “The funny thing about Kari is she is not fond of other dogs, but this time it was different; I’m so proud of her helping to find something good in all the devastation caused by the flooding.”

A small moment of good amidst the devastation. Thank you for your service, Kari!
